Right, a lot of the press has programmed itself to think that the default mode of USA is Republican and Democratic governments are anomalies. "Center-right nation." etc.

I can't speak for john but I'm not referring to governments per se. I'm referring to the idea that the GOP represents real, authentic americans, and therefore are the legitimate expression of popular will at 46 or 51

I agree with that -- just trying to tease out how that assumption plays itself out in political coverage. It's why Dems are expected more to do bipartisan co-operation than GOP.
