I can't speak for john but I'm not referring to governments per se. I'm referring to the idea that the GOP represents real, authentic americans, and therefore are the legitimate expression of popular will at 46 or 51

The thing is that we live in a demonstrably center-left nation. Dems candidates have won popular vote for pres in almost all recent elections, regularly get higher percentage of congressional votes, & voters consistently favor wide array of Dem positions & policies. And yet...
