I think the argument is that if the professors were not overwhelmingly left-of-center, ordinary liberals could more clearly see elite universities as the enemy that they are to equity.

If professors are “left of center” how are they an “enemy to equity”. Elites of education or the donor class are largely to the left of the median voter after all.

Maybe. Although the skill set that makes someone a successful academic at elite school usually different than skills to be successful union organizer or activist. In any case, we're talking about a very small # of people.
