the iron logic of capitalism is that those who have capital with which to repay when the bill is due are creditworthy and those who do not, are not. you cannot write an algorithm which predicts repayment which does not take into account whether enough money can be extracted.

similarly, an algorithm cannot give access to computing resources or remove access to those who already have them. it cannot make your computer better than it is. it cannot make technical education better.

there are ways in which algorithms can make the world more just, and ways in which we can make algorithms which are more just. but when injustice is written directly into the objective function, we cannot twist the data to achieve an unjust objective function in a just manner.

Your argument is interesting enough but part of a larger tendency that is worth noting. Fighting class inequality is always a little bit too hard to do.

He’s not saying it’s too hard to do. He’s saying better algorithms aren’t the tool to do it.

Sure, but I feel like liberals are very eager to show that such and such a tool can't fight inequality. And it turns out, no tools can & inequality keeps getting worse. Liberalism is the Bartleby or Oblomov of ideologies.
