      1. Agree with the points that the battleground for fight over democracy is the states, that current Dem plans don't encompass that & mass protests might turn out to be the ultimate solution.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1403381356441202689 …

This (gated) Yglesias post from yesterday gets at a sobering point: the threats to democracy are quite serious, but there's only so much you can do with federal legislation when some of the threats come from, say, heavily gerrymandered state legislatures. https://www.slowboring.com/p/the-fight-for-democracy-is-bigger … pic.twitter.com/eieQ2PKwFf

      2. A crucial move people need to make in the "democracy is under threat" discussion is to recognize the Democrats as they currently exist aren't up to the job. You can, if inclined, make excuses (Manchin, senate etc). But conclusion is still the same: not up to the job.

          3. To say Democrats aren't up to the job isn't a counsel of despair. Rather it's a call for pressure to change party & also organize outside party. America was very far from up-to-the-job in 1939. And then we were. So there’s that.

Neither are the people. Rent is too important and you can't engage in mass protest on the scale that brings down governments without risking eviction/financial ruin. The wage slavery even for the middle class is much tighter a chain than in 1789 or 1848.

I'm curious to know why you think it's up to some guy on Twitter to figure that out and not, like, the President and the Speaker of the House.

Agree in the main, and there're a lot of pieces to this but step one is a frank acknowledgement of the situation along with getting past a certain complacency born of "American exceptionalism" (i.e. it can't happen here).
