1. Since my name was brought up here, I'll note that in his earlier piece Chait did not make an effort to distinguish between bioweapon theory & lab leak theory, which is a problem because it feeds into narrative that Trump was victim of liberal press.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/1402639064319279117 …

3. I continue to insist it's important to get the nuances of the story right -- to make clear the differences between the theories scientists find worth investigating (accidental lab leak) and the unsupported ones promoted by extremists.https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/contra-the-covid-contrarians?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …

doesn't seem contradictory to me. "Emerged" ≠ "released."

The issue isn't emerged/released its that Trump is being characterized as arguing it emerged when in fact Trump & Co. said much more radical things.

Chait also makes no distinction within the accidental lab leak hypothesis between the scenarios that 1. the virus was collected from animals for study and 2. the virus was engineered. This muddying of this is part of the same mess.

Everyone told Chait it would feed the crazies, especially him harping about lab leak every day for two weeks, but Chait gotta Chait. "Look what a fair minded liberal I am, scolding my own team!" He does this over and over again, issue after issue.
