Understanding Comics, even the title, is so tied to comics self defeating reverence for rules/systems. Try to imagine a book called Understanding Painting full of inane charts & people taking it seriously as some kind of legitimate knowledge authority instead of laughing at it.

The title is a reference to Marshall McLuhan's Understanding Media. In that light, it's clearer that it's a book that foregrounds comics' qualities as a communicative medium rather than being principally about art or aesthetics.

McLuhan's title itself was a play on the famous Cleanth Brooks & R.P. Warren new criticism text Understanding Poetry. All three are formalist texts.
