Agree that the investment some Democratic lawmakers have in gerrymandering is a part of this story. Would be good to have more reporting on it. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1401574348956356614 …

“if you create safe GOP seats you also create safe Dem seats” Not necessarily. Basically, the Dems want to ban cracking, not ban packing.

I will be interesting in seeing what Montana does with its new seat. The Rs entirely control the process, but they have a choice of having two seats, each with a small R majority, or make one safe R and the other up for grabs

Except gerrymandering doesn’t impact the Senate. There are other structural forces at play with regard to the Senate, but gerrymandering only affects the House, state legislatures, and a few EC votes for the most part.

Isn't a consequence of gerrymandering that incentives are taken away from elected officials to compromise to find solutions? Wouldn't diverse districts determined purely by, say, geography be more likely to require them to act as arbiters rather than merely advocates?

How does this apply to senators?

Dems and GOP benefit from gerrymandering. Safe districts mean campaign money is funneled into other races. Without gerrymandering, the craven politicians will be demanding even more donations because every district will be in play. Let a thousand new parties bloom.

Wait, Senate seats aren’t gerrymandered. House is already on board with the legislation.

I can respect your opinion but have you ever ran for office? Manage a local or National campaign? The GOP would Gerrymander until all Democrats abolished. Republicans are playing for the entire control of everything. Personally, especially on this day I want a free US no NAZIS!

Wisconsin had the GOP get 40% of the votes and 67% of the state House. Because of gerrymandering. Do better.
