All the major spy rings were broken by Verona. By the time of Truman's loyalty oaths and McCarthyism all you had was security theatre (not unlike post-9/11) for an overwhelmingly phantom threat.

Well... I woulda thought ¶ really ought to have sentences like: "It is hard to see how it could have leaked from the lab without (a) some people at the lab getting it, and then (b) them infecting a lot of people at the lab with whom they were in close social contact. That... 1/pic.twitter.com/UrVd9I2JvN

The lab leak theory has always been possible, but an order of magnitude less likely than zoonosis. There is no credible circumstantial evidence that should change our priors. Dr Andersen is among those who took it very seriously initially yet his work increased his skepticismpic.twitter.com/S2kvqRhApI

This is how I feel too. It's possible that media were "too aggressive" in calling it debunked, but leak is also a less-plausible and unnecessary explanation, so it's irresponsible to give it equal weight to the more likely theory.

I don't understand. Who is saying that it has to be given "equal weight"? I'm just saying it should have been given some actual weight. After last March, it wasn't. It was equated with climate-change denialism and attributed almost exclusively to xenophobia.

I think many amplifying the story have an agenda such as to build a casus belli for a new Cold War with China (Cotton et al), xenophobia, and to protect Trump. This should increase skepticism of the underlying evidence, not lead someone to make this claim.pic.twitter.com/HUMmegUMo0

Yes, and that's why most non-right-wingers ignored the lab-leak theory all last year. But it's 15 months later, and no direct evidence of zoonosis has been found. And lots of actual scientists - not "contrarian centrists" - are now saying we need a real investigation.

I'm all in favor of a full investigation -- although I think Chinese gov't paranoia & authoritarianism will make it impossible! But lab leak is different from deliberately made bioweapon, no?

Yes. Thank God no one is saying: "Bioweapon, & to trick us they tried it out first on their own city to gain plausible deniability! & they were able to suppress it so quickly because they have the antidote, & are keeping it secret!"

Yes, very different. But I don't think anyone in this thread (afaict just from scrolling back through it) has suggested it was a deliberately made bioweapon, and certainly none of the scientists calling for further investigation seem to be suggesting that.
