This is a terrible take. This is the equivalent of saying liberals who recognized that Hiss was lying, and that the Rosenbergs were guilty, were useful idiots, rather than people interested in what was true rather than what was politically convenient.

The Cold War liberals who vastly over0hyped the Soviet threat beyond its reality were in fact the handmaidens of reaction. Truman's loyalty oaths prepared the way for McCarthyism.

Eastern Europeans would probably disagree that the threat Stalin posed to democracy was “overhyped.” Regardless, that has nothing to do with the fact that going to the wall to defend people who were absolutely guilty of what they were accused of was an absurd thing to do.

Cold War liberals did not just claim Soviet domination of Eastern Europe was wrong or that Hiss/Julius Rosenberg were guilty. They also claimed there was an international communist movement threat to take over the world & domestic spying was major problem in 1950s. Both wrong

We can argue over the definition of "major," but the fact that Klaus Fuchs, the Rosenbergs, Harry Dexter White, the Silvermaster ring, and Hiss were all funneling information (and, in White's case, printing plates) to the USSR was undeniably a problem.

All the major spy rings were broken by Verona. By the time of Truman's loyalty oaths and McCarthyism all you had was security theatre (not unlike post-9/11) for an overwhelmingly phantom threat.

Setting aside that most Cold War liberals were not pro-McCarthy, I don't understand how these liberals were supposed to know that all the major spy rings had been broken, since Venona was secret.

Truman knew. But he over-hyped spy threat in any case because it was useful for selling Cold War. The argument is not Cold War liberals were pro-McCarthy but that they helped pave way for him -- it's a standard view among historians.

Yes, I know. But you keep skipping over the fact that the Cold War liberals were right that Hiss and the Rosenbergs actually were Soviet spies, and that the left press went to great lengths to insist they were not, and that their trials were witch hunts.

Was Ethel Rosenberg a spy? My understanding is that it's unclear. Julius was guilty but the trial was a travesty (as even Cold War liberal turned neo-con Ronald Radosh acknowledged).

How could Truman or anyone know that all the spy rings were broken or there couldn’t be more?
