Read about the Mission System in early California. It's horrifying. Most of this was set up in places that were territories and not states. I seem to recall from my Nebraska history classes as a kid that this had something to do with it but I'm an economist, not a lawyer so ...

The mission system was set up by the Spanish. I don't know how horrifying you've read, but Spanish soldiers would go to native villages and rape the women to stigmatize them and thus introduce hierarchy, which the mission priests would then exploit to enslave the natives.

The Church ostensibly did the work the US government was unwilling, unable, or otherwise disinclined to do. By and large this was a profound and important role the Church filled and should not be somehow cast under suspicion based on the horror uncovered in Canada.
-
Shouldn’t it though? There are still people in Canada who defend the system here in pretty much those words. Why would the same churches in the US do better there?
