Insofar as it’s possible that they’re truly extraterrestrial, I think unmanned (for lack of a better word) probes are more likely than actual spacecraft.

I think ET is incredibly unlikely but if we posit that, whatever AI is driving these probes could be programmed to test stage of tech development, in which case hassling pilots makes sense.

luckily we have Elon Musk so we'll never reach the stage of tech development that triggers wiping us out

you guys should really ask yourselves why so many of these reports come from US Navy pilots, all flying one particular type of aircraft...

An intelligence capable of interstellar travel would probably have much more effect means of testing our technological capabilities than endless cat-and-mouse games, and it’s hard to imagine they would go to all that trouble just to prank some primitive ape-creatures.

If another planet developed AI thousands or millions of years ago, the interaction of a few wayward spacecraft with other lifeforms might be insignificant. Maybe they are using us for training their AI babies. or it's wild teenage AI, breaking the rules. or mentally ill AI.

But you look at it from your perspective. Look at it from the view of Jane Goodall with the apes. The apes might have thought it was "hassling" but it wasn't. It was just research. Why would a species come light-years? Research. Testing could be a stage in that.
