      1. The type of danger Trump represents right now hard to accurately describe without falling into either complacency or hyperbole. Trump is unmoored from reality, has the ability to do harm, but a real coup is unlikely.https://twitter.com/janecoaston/status/1400510975573467146 …

      2. There is no mechanism by which Trump can pull off a coup right now. For one thing he's never had the army on board. Still, as a former president with tens of millions of supporters, he could cause a lot of mischief by encouraging disorder, as on January 6.

          3. Gaming out the worst case scenario: Trump runs again as GOP nominee in 2024, loses again, but has GOP House & states overturn election results (in effect a 2020 redux with a more committed GOP). That would lead to a very dark place.

"Mechanism" is the key word. The real concern needs to be focus on what happens if the GOP wins the House in 2022, then Trump, or his successor, demands the party toss out the presidential results in 2024. At this point, can anyone honestly claim they'd resist just on principle?

Add to that GOP-controlled state legislatures teed up to proclaim a slate of electors; Secretaries of State empowered to override elections; local canvassing boards stacked with fanatics. Trouble is, hard to get folks focused on that a whole cycle in advance (2022 vs. 2024).
