1. I want to return to the @EricLevitz piece because it really underscores that the GOP war on democracy is one of choice. It raises the crucial question of why a party would decided to shrink the electorate instead of enlarging their share:https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/06/gop-voting-laws-texas-sb7-war-on-democracy.html …

7. Everything we're seeing today - not to mention Trump's domination - would indicate that Pat Buchanan won the wars of the 1990s. The party prefers to dominate by shrinking electorate rather than be compromised (as they see it) by POC votes. I have a book written by a staffer on the 92 GOP campaign (forget who) with a chapter on Kemp's outreach attempt to get an endorsement from (wait for it) Farrakhan! He was even into it but they eventually decided he was not worth the risk. Can't even conceive of that now.

'92 or '96? Kemp did have some kind words for Farrakhan when he was the VP candidate. (I don't know the backstory but would not be surprised if Jude Wanniski was involved somehow.)https://www.nytimes.com/1996/09/10/us/kemp-praises-farrakhan-for-his-focus-on-family.html …
