Biden at Arlington Cemetery: “Democracy itself is in peril, here at home." True. But does Biden's tropism towards bipartisanship & institutional norms hamper the fight to save democracy?https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/bidens-democracy-dilemma?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …

I agree with the 2nd sentence. But this is a totally different political environment from 1948 (or whatever). Geographical polarization means the GOP just doesn’t pay enough of a price electorally for national unpopularity, except in cases of total disaster (2008).

It's a real issue when more Democrats vote and more Republicans win, as happened in NC.https://bit.ly/33EO11K

The point is this. When you say "democracy is in peril" Not just rumble but existential it means like saying the foundation of your home is ALMOST breaking and the ground is breaking up and the walls are ALMOST tumbling down+ the roof is on fire.

You wanna repair it BEFORE the house is lost. But the cause is a whole bunch of people who are trying to break the foundation, punching walls and starting fires and they are trying to prevent you from fixing or dialing 911. THAT is what the state of democracy today is.
