Jeet has his moments! (I quite liked his review of "Joker.") But this is not one of them. Not one of the good ones, at least.

Weird, I've read McPherson and I don't remember him saying the war aims of the union army at the start of the war was abolition. Rather, like all historians, he documents how and why the war aims changed from start of war to end.

Politicians do this sort of thing all the time. Sometimes, we know from their own later accounts that their actual beliefs may have differed from the things that were expedient for them to say to ultimately reach their goals.

Right. One analogy someone suggested is Obama being nominally opposed to same-sex marriage in 2008 (despite having supported it years earlier!)

That is a glib analogy which clouds over the real moral drama of the civil war years, how Lincoln & many other Northerners who wanted to contain slavery came to see that the only way to win the war was abolition. Lincoln was still pitching colonization in early presidency.

Yes. Everything he’s saying here is more or less straight out of Foner’s Fiery Trial. It’s not wild revisionism.

Yeah, I don't even think it's limited to Foner. I'd call it the overwhelming historical consensus for decades. Even the old ken Burns CW doc, if I recall correctly, tells the story of the war as the slow move from "war for union" to "war to abolish slavery."

Exactly. It feels weird to be upbraided as a Naomi Wolfe when all I am doing is literally repeating the mainstream consensus view.

Yes, exactly. Abolitionism was hardly incidental to Lincoln's political career! I'm well aware of his remark to Greeley about saving the Union/preserving slavery if necessary, but he was tailoring the message to masses who didn't want to go to war to free Southern slaves.

I agree that "Naomi Wolfe" is way too harsh.
