To be fair – He *did* say he didn't read the essay before it was published. I don't know if that's standard for the EIC of an op-ed section (in my mind... that's like his only job?), especially with an essay called "Send In the Troops."

This Dowd piece isn't really an op-ed, or a simple opinion piece from a regular columnist, it's an uncritical interview with a NY friend who is a proven liar, like her earlier pieces on Trump and family. Doesn't belong anywhere in the Times
