I should note that this twitter account has been steadfastly agnostic about the lab leak theory. https://twitter.com/bendreyfuss/status/1396966383011913730 …

My general feeling is that when you have an emerging scientific story, best to treat it as provisional and listen to evolving expert opinion. Some people get scandalized when consensus changes, but that's science.

The one political point to make here is that the authoritarian & closes nature of Chinese regime is feeding into this -- that people naturally get suspicious in the face of officials clamping down on news. This is why the lab leak theory inevitable whether it happened or no.

the problems begin when people treat science stories as political stories

also no one really seems capable of describing what difference it makes or what (not completely insane or evil) actions we would take if true

Also, "Twitter" isn't a thinking entity. It may be that @bendreyfuss's timeline is doing something, but the scientists I follow and I have been doing something else.

Fair enough and good advice. And very good for you for being agnostic on the lab leak theory; I am, too.🙂 🤔💡What now comes to mind is how Covid changed from being spread by contact to being airborne. People realized, in a # of ways, that it was the better explanation.

My guess is that although a good range of people will try to make the lab leak theory dominate, what for lack of a better phrase is Burns' Contagion theory* (which I rebus as this 🦇 💩ped on that 🐖 that was on the way to wet market) will prevail.

“Some people get scandalized when consensus changes, but that's science.” It’s not the consensus around science changing; it’s the politics.
