The question is where protestantism ends and secularism begins, and where protestant and secular values conflict. I think that's complicated, and a source of many a red/blue faultline in our politics and culture.

The problem with Protestantism is that it doesn't stand for much. There is very little Protestant theology, and what there is of it is hardly relevant to much of anything. Protestants are much more influential than Protestantism.

even though many Americans who belong to a Protestant church today probably never use that term to describe themselves. I've met several Baptists, Methodists, etc. who told me, "We're not Protestants, we're Christians."
