The whole question of preserving papers of the dead is tricky but my instinct is to err on the side of preservation.

Yeah, as I think you and I have discussed, the frequency with which these requests are ignored suggests that the requesters may realize its questionable whether these wishes will be followed.

Yes, I remember discussed this. Also: private papers of the public figures need to be in public institutions. Amazingly Robert E. Lee's family still has many of his papers (which they won't show scholars).
