Many people literally use the word literal to mean figurative. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1395919903065059336 …

And, probably what Matty is getting at, it's a risky electoral strategy to scoff at the idea of "biblical authority" while relying on people invested in that idea to deliver the votes for you. He's rightly pointing out a potential weak spot in the Dem coalition.

I grew up in a missionary family of Biblical inerrantists, to say that they did not know the entire contents of the Bible or often violated things they claimed to believe is of course obvious, but that doesn’t mean this belief did not influence other beliefs or behavior. It does.

The 'literal' wording is a bit odd too tbh. Everyone, even the most died in the wool fundamentalists agree that part of the bible eg. The parables, the songs and proverbs included in the bible are not literal and we need to know their genre when interpreting them.

Yeah. It seems the answer is more a signaling response (and could be done in part to signal to themselves that are faithful)
-
This is the reason. As someone who would have answered the Bible was the literal word of God a decade or so ago, I can attest my response would have been based much more on what I thought the right answer was, not what I actually believed.

I suspect you’re overestimating humanity.

I read a deconstruction from a Biblical literalist that interpreted the "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone," as Jesus beseeching the crowd for a non-sinner to step forward to have the honor of casting the first stone of the stoning.
