It's a j-school position so being a high profile controversionalist (one who edited a feature that created a huge national debate that elicited a presidential level response) counts as salient experience! If Pychon were offered tenured MFA job you wouldn't say "where's the PhD?"
Look, I'm on record as saying J-school shouldn't even exist. But if universities have J-schools then they deserve the normal protections we give other academics.

Right, it’s just silly to hold J-schools to a standard that doesn’t normally prevail in those departments. It’s such a bad faith argument. (And as a journalist with no J-school degree — personally, I’ve got a useless Ph.D. — I’ve got no opinion on the value of the program).
