I swear I have not fully devoted the necessary attention and cognitive energy to this topic but my peripheral sense is that UFO's are clearly real? And have been hanging around our airspace for a while?

UFOs just means unidentified. Obviously there are flying objects we can't identify. They may be ETs but that's really, really unlikely.

how do you measure the background likelihood of ETs though? there is no data

Obviously we have zero idea. But I think there are a number of data points that get you close to a very low probability that extraterrestrial life forms are visiting the earth in space ships. I'm pretty confident there is life beyond earth.

Right, the likelihood of technological civilizations on other worlds is high, the likelihood of such civilizations contacting us is very low.

this opens the question of: then what are the Air Force people seeing, then?

This is exactly the question. There are some very good reasons why these are unlikely to be ETs (as this article shows). But their technological capabilities appear to be way beyond ours or (probably) our adversaries. So I'm stuck.pic.twitter.com/hDdgMgoyGx

And I'd say if we move to the low probability of contact, within that I suspect a civ capable of vast interstellar travel cld manage either to make contact or stay out of sight.

Since my doc research was on early columbian contact, the idea of being found by other life forms is basically an existential/catastrophic scenario. that never goes well for the less advanced civilization.

Then where are they? There is, as of yet, zero evidence. The Fermi Paradox suggests that writing it off to noise that we have no evidence is wrong.

I have a hard imagining we are having regular encounters with extra terrestrials yet we not detected any sign of them other than first person accounts and the occasional video. We have an insane amount of sensors on earth. You would think we would be seeing more evidence.

and if clear, convincing video existed -- as it should, in the age of the iphone -- we should all have seen it by now. "i heard the government has it!" okay, so explain how youtube doesn't.

But again, we have 1 data point to go on and even that point is hazy. Without a much clearer picture of the conditions in which life can develop, any model of such probabilities is like a car without an engine.
