There are a few people who know how to use block quotes right. The late Marvin Mudrick was very good at it because he had an eye for revealing quotes. But, yes, best avoided in lesser hands.

I mostly agree, but sometimes what makes a passage great is the way it builds and then resolves a rhythm, and you can't get that across in shorter quotes.

Oh, absolutely, but as Laura says you really have to be super selective to get maximum effect. Quoting is a skill! (apologies for exclamation mark)

Placement is also important. A well chosen blockquote right at the beginning of a review can both give a good sense of what the original author is doing, and create a counter-theme that the review’s cadences can riff off, parody or contradict as seems appropriate.
