      1. There's a big push for amnesia on the Trump era in the name of healing ("let's never talk about this again") so I want to keep insisting that not only was the authoritarian threat real but also that we're in the beginning of finding out how extensive it was.

      2. Some of the authoritarian threat is hard to talk about because it cuts against normal narratives. Trump tried to turn military into private servants. This was resisted (all to the good) but very resistance entailed military acting rogue against president.

      3. This is the paradox we still have to grapple with: because Trump didn't know how to govern, he gave impossible orders, which military didn't carry out. But upshot was 4 years with de facto military acting without civilian control. Not the military’s fault that those elected to be the civilian control were incapable of acting as such. The nation was saved by adherence to process and procedure, not so much by “going rogue.”

Also worth pointing out the previous free-lance operations in earlier GOP administrations: especially The Wolfowitz/Rumsfeld/Feith “Office of Special Plans,” and the Cheney/Libby/Addington cabal under Bush II; the Col North operations under Reagan; the Nixon “Plumbers.”

It suggests to me that the military is at its core problematic in that they did this tapdance to this level of rot. They brought in a helicopter to scare and scatter civilians while Trump hid in the WH, and made it go away. Tanks.

I didn't read it yet, but, the military isn't supposed to follow orders against their oath to the country. Maybe you said something about it.

WOW! Terrific article. I’m just old enough to remember DeGaulle who was a post-war resistance hero to many, but heartily disliked by many as well. I don’t think we in the west realize how precarious our future is.

You’re being very generous in saying “Trump didn’t know how to govern,” which lets him off the hook for all the intentional criminal and corrupt acts he and his administration committed.

The “Logan’s Run” option. Wouldn’t solve the polarization problem.
