The Trump-as-Jimmy-Carter analogy had some suggestive power but it has fallen apart since election: Dems in 1980s ran away from Carter, while GOP embraces Trump all the harder.

Cleveland won the popular vote in all three elections he ran in (although he never got a majority in any because of 3rd-party candidates). And earlier, he became governor of NY by the biggest margin ever in a contested election. That's very different from Trump.
