Trump undermined military/civilian relations in 2 distinct ways: by being weak, as you say, which meant on actual policy was decided by Pentagon not president and also by trying to use military where it didn't belong (to put down protests).

Exactly right. Authoritarianism tempered by incompetence, but still undermining rule of law by blunderbuss approach. America dodged a bullet by things not going as badly as they could have.
