I think they realized that sounding defensive about stuff they can’t explain encourages people to believe in a cover-up. It’s not their role or their expertise to identify every random thing in the sky and they gain nothing from trying to dissuade people from believing in aliens.

In fact, letting people believe in aliens can redound to the Air Force’s benefit when there is something they can identify but don’t want to talk about.

Qanon-style thinking has filtered through all the branches of the military that fly airplanes. It's no surprise then that they're inclined to say, 'yep, aliens.' The evidence has not changed, but the interpretive criteria have.
