1. In terms of democratic regression in the United States, the example that most people think of is of course the rise of Jim Crow in late 19th century as part of counter-revolution against Reconstruction era. But there was an earlier example also pertinent for now.

This thread is a good reminder that anytime someone thinks Andrew Jackson had redeeming qualities, they are wrong.

Trump hung Jackson's portrait right next to his desk in the Oval. Obama had Lincoln. Biden went with Ben Franklin and a bust of Cesar Chavez below Ben. Just in case anyone was still curious about Trump's motives. Lolpic.twitter.com/Hufraql0EE

Reasonable, but one can easily argue that Jackson shares as much in common with Bernie Sanders as with Trump. The "White Man's Republic" of that age was probably the most democratic society known to man up to that point. And Jackon's primary ideology was Nationalism.

The most democratic society??? Laughable. The French and Haitian revolutions both produced greater gains for democracy than the American revolution by a long shot.

Excellent article. (Fyi there’s one minor editing error: you’ve got Bill Clinton twice in your list of former presidents)
