Again excellent & I would add: these rightwing crusades against liberalism only gain traction when liberals out of cravenness & opportunism join in the anti-left agitation: as in Wilson and Truman administrations or recent mainstreaming of anti-PC & anti-cancel culture discoursehttps://twitter.com/lionel_trolling/status/1393182626299748353 …

Far leftists are useful to the hard right in the interest of propaganda, but their main enemy in the united states is really liberalism. The constant move, since the Red Scare really, is to associate mainstream liberalism with inchoate or secret leftism

(They also gain traction when liberals move left, turning radicalism into something bigger and more threatening to more people.)

I'd argue the evidence is against that: liberals turned left from circa 1900-1916 and 1930-1945. It was only after when, for national security reasons, liberals embraced anti-radicalism that reactionary forces were able to come to the fore.

The Democratic Party shifted significantly left in the late 60s and the result was Reaganism for 40 years. (I realize you’re on the left, so you may scoff at the notion that the Dems moved meaningfully left in that period. But millions of American voters saw it differently.)

There's a 10 year gap between late 1960s and Reagan. During those years you had Jimmy Carter, who significantly pioneered neo-liberalism (deregulation, anti-unionism, Volcker shock, Brzezinski's foreign policy). That's precondition for Reagan.

I don’t buy that narrative at all. Carter was perceived as a hapless weakling. As were Mondale and Dukakis after him. Anyway, we’re not going to persuade each other. The world looks different from the left than it does from the center (and from the right, for that matter).

Conservatives portray all Democratic candidates as hapless & weak, including Clinton, Obama, and Biden. The point is to look at policies. Carter as pioneer of neo-liberalism is pretty widely accepted now, not just in radicals circles.

Sometime the charge of weakness sticks, and sometimes it doesn’t. In retrospect “Carter the neolib”might seem convincing, but what’s the causality? “I don’t like Carter so I’ll vote for this b-movie actor instead to get more of what Carter is doing”?

Carter's neolibalism led to a significant primary challenger from the more liberal Ted Kennedy, which was a big factor in weakening Carter (including some of his votes going to John Anderson). More broadly, embrace of austerity & Volcker shock caused economic pain which hurt JC
