My line back in December and January was that Trump's efforts towards a coup would fail because he didn't have the support of the military (particularly top brass) on this. Which I think was and is true. But clearly Trumpists trying to lay grounds to change that.https://twitter.com/AlexThomp/status/1392247012456898561 …

At least 2% of retired U.S. generals and admirals are nutty right-wingers. I am not shocked or scared by that fact.

Sure, there have always been Curtis LeMay types. But the conjunction of them organizing this letter with widespread GOP refusal to accept legitimacy of Biden's win makes this worrisome.

More than 200 retired generals and admirals signed a letter endorsing Biden, though.

There's a difference between endorsing a candidate (of either party) and endorsing a whack-a-doodle conspiracy theory that calls into question the legitimacy of the current government.

Sure, but you’re talking about a tiny fraction of all retired generals and admirals.

true, but is there any precedent for even this many doing something as strange as this?

I don’t understand the point. There’s no precedent for 70% of the opposing party saying the election was stolen. So, again, it’s not surprising that of that 70%, some percentage would be high-ranked officers.

Right, we're in unprecedented territory but that suggests we pay attention to to institutions that are top-heavy with Republicans. So this open letter is an interesting data point. (And as I said, in past I have insisted military is not with Trump on a coup).

One interesting counter is that the top ranks of the military are now like the top ranks of corporate America, much better-educated than ever before.

I think that's a moderating factor, absolutely. But there are other forces tugging in different directions (I think the career of Mike Flynn is instructive). I think military/civilian stuff is worth attention.
