My line back in December and January was that Trump's efforts towards a coup would fail because he didn't have the support of the military (particularly top brass) on this. Which I think was and is true. But clearly Trumpists trying to lay grounds to change that.https://twitter.com/AlexThomp/status/1392247012456898561 …

As in USA, there's some retired military in France that is making dangerous anti-democracy arguments:https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/the-reactionary-international …

History demonstrates that coups tend to fail the first time and are successful the second time (Cuba, Germany, Venezuela, etc.). That's why it is very important to hold the insurrectionists responsible for the events of 1/6. That's why sweeping it under the rug is not a solution.

There's a long tradition of retired military brass becoming right-wing hacks. Pedro Del Valle, George Stratmeyer, John Crommelin, Albert Wedemeyer... The list is long.

It seems like there was a pretty solid after action assessment and they’re pretty efficiently taking corrective action - (voting laws, ostracizing “disloyal” Republicans, garnering military support) - to make sure the next attempt will succeed

I think they want to, but most of what I'm seeing in this letter is just recycled conspiracy theories. My concern is who's in there NOW and how they react. I think the real question is how much of the military has to back a coup to succeed, and how we don't reach those numbers.

No... it only matters if one of retired generals are known and respected by the active military. That’s why the current secretary of defense needed a waiver: he fits this and could potentially succeed in committing a coup. There probably is only one or two others

You’re not going to successfully convince troops to follow you in a coup if they don’t know who you are
