      1. The Liz Cheney speech is causing a lot of ripples but people aren't paying attention to what she actually said (which is crucial for understanding why her brand of anti-Trump Republicanism is a political dead end): she's calling for a new Cold War.

      2. Cheney's speech is filled with Cold War references: "communist domination...Castro's totalitarian regime...Soviet gulag...the cusp of another Cold War -- this time with communist China." The argument is USA needs to unite in order to combat Red China

      3. Cheney's invocation of the Cold War (and her call for a new one) makes sense when you realize that historically the United States is fractious nation needing external threats to unify. But does this politics of elite consensus still work?https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/cheneys-cold-war-nostalgia-is-no?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …

Neoconservatism is the permanent plan B for republicans, Plan A is just nuts. We all know that eh?

hm, if only there were another "enemy" which threatened the lives of not only every single American but also the population of the entire globe, which we could get together and "combat" through transforming our economy and relations to each other and the earth?

it is remarkable how the end of the Cold War matched perfectly with the rise of today’s toxic politics

Politics were no less toxic in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

None of that made the news/social media, so I'm not sure that messaging has legs. But a cold war with your #1 trading partner seems ... counterproductive.

Don't forget Fascism used the "reds/Communists " too. Hitler combined it with the Jews. That is what Trump and the GOP are doing right now. Just look at Elise's letter " Radical Socialist Democratic". it's a strategy and it might be a good one. Makes sense Cheney does too.

The enemy of your enemy is no friend by that virtue. Cheney still represents a dangerous and back dated view of America we need to move past.
