Bill "OK Obama, but my wife will be next" Clinton?

2008 showed that he was a paper tiger outside of the DNC. Actual regular Dems didn’t revere him on the level Republicans revere Trump. Bernie doesn’t hit 47% in 2016 if the Clintons had Trump levels of influence.

Could you say Reagan? His health prevented him from having any actual say on GOP but there cult around him is insane. Look at how much GOP still pushes supply side econ. See also attempts to slap is name on everything (there’s even a joke about it in “America the Book”)

Is it Trump who has the power, or the idea of Trump? It's not like he's running party affairs personally. It's more that party leaders feel a strong compulsion to claim to be following in his footsteps. I'll be curious to see how much weight his endorsements have for 2022.

Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's power starts to shrink if/when he tries to exercise it. Like, if he decides to go hard against Kemp in Georgia, will they whole Party just fall in line? I really doubt it.

Not just an ex-president, either, but a defeated one (with two impeachments under his copious belt).
