the truth is that tv is, at best, an imperfect medium for dramatic, serialized storytelling and only one time has it successfully transcended those limitations and it wasn't with mad men, as enjoyable as it may have been

I can't remember who wrote this but I do recall an article that places all the ills of the TV format on the idea that it was only finite as far as the ratings made it go. They could stretch a basic plot to last 10 seasons or cancel it halfway through the first arc as they wished.

The worst of the lot? The sitcom, frozen in the status quo, and only evolving when it was getting obvious that the setting was losing steam and that desperation over collapsing ratings was setting in.
