1. Upon news of the Bill & Melinda Gates divorce, there was immediate speculation about the implications for global public health. The Gates Foundation quickly pushed back to say all is fine. Isn't it odd that the personal life of 2 people could have such large policy impact?

the fortune is this large because it compounded at a crazy rate for many years. pre-emptively taxing and distributing it along the way would result in a way smaller sum being redistributed. feel like this isn't discussed in these general broadsides against wealth concentration.

Given their philanthropic interests, it seems obvious that redistributing the Gates fortune evenly to American households would be a barely-significant gain for national equity, and a big negative for global equity (esp. in health).
