This is a crucial distinction. There's a difference between erring on the side of caution and erring on the side that endangers other people.https://twitter.com/RhetoricPJ/status/1389648663409045506 …

re: The Atlantic piece about "lockdown liberals," the trick is that while people being overly cautious is a real thing, its not a symmetrical phenomenon with anti-masking, because only one of those things exists in opposition to a shared notion of the common

"Endangers other people" stopped being a thing after there was more vaccine supply than demand.

There are people who aren’t yet vaccinated. I got vaccinated as soon as I was allowed and I’m still not at my 2 weeks. I know people getting their second shots this week. And people with less control over their own schedule may still not be able to get theirs.

They know that. Hence the rhetorical move that being overly cautious makes people less encouraged to take the vaccine, and causing more harm overall. It's another version of "the liberals made me fascist" trope. And it's dispiriting to see it published at the Atlantic.

If the lockdowns don't cause harm then why not perpetually stay in lockdown? The biggest falsehood of the past year is that strict lockdowns are somehow devoid of downsides.

And — because of the multiplicative effects of disease spread — erring even slightly on the side of danger has catastrophic consequences! Whereas erring slightly on the side of caution risks only your additional efforts.

Cautious people are like the contestants on the Price is Right who bid $1. Yeah that’s way too low, but they might win! Whereas risky people should be mindful that if you bid even $1 over the retail price, you lose entirely.

Exactly. And there’s something odd about the same right-wing populists who complain about elite condescension insist that liberals must stop being “overly cautious” in order to model the right behavior for conservative vaccine skeptics. Are they children?
