Another counterfactual: What would Marxism in the 'third world' look like without Khrushchev? He deserves a bit more credit here. Without him, would there have been such an effort to franchise Marx's message throughout the world?

Interesting point, but I think the key turning point was the Comintern congress in 1920 & Chinese communist party foundation in 1921.
