1. So, the CIA intersectional ad has been getting some polarizing reactions (Left: look at this shit, the right: oh, no, the CIA is woke, some liberals: actually it's good CIA is anti-racist).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X55JPbAMc9g …

2. It's all too telling that Glenn Greenwald takes the right wing position (see, the woke left is running the show). This seems to be a pretty naive understanding of how intelligence agencies use ideology.https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1388930443299467264 …

Glenn GreenwaldVerified account @ggreenwaldLiberals and parts of the cultural left refuse to admit they have power -- they always insist it's the right who wields it -- but the fact that the most powerful entities in the country now speak this way (corporations, security agencies, etc.) is a testament to their hegemony: https://twitter.com/RichardHanania/status/1388926444294660096 …10 replies 8 retweets 116 likesShow this thread -
3. We actually have a great historical precedence on this since the original CIA of 1947-1968 was heavily invested in shoring up what was called the non-communist left (liberals in USA, social democrats in rest of world). That was NOT because CIA was progressive.

Good piece, Jeet. I would note a couple of wrinkles: 1) the very real anti-liberal pivot among CIA employees stemmed in part from resentment of Carter and Turner's "Halloween Massacre," which got blamed on "liberalism" but was arguably the inevitable post-Vietnam drawdown.

2) Even after the CIA’s rightward turn, it remained toward the Left end of the national-security bureaucracy on everything from Soviet strength and intentions to Saddam Hussein's nuclear program and deterability.

Most likely you know here things and they just didn’t fit within the scope of the piece.

Yes --although I should have maybe alluded to them in a sentence or two.

I could swear I remember some lamentations in the 00s that, "Somehow the Operations Directorate now comprises largely monolingual white, Mormon careerists, and that just ain’t gonna work now that we’ve got all this shit to do."
