this is a video made by the CIA as part of their recruitment drive. look at the language used, and the t-shirt she's wearing: a literal raised fist. you can't make this shit up. they are coopting what was supposed to be an emancipatory language to enact mass murder and torture pic.twitter.com/ljMsZhBpSP

      Jeet Heer Retweeted CIA

If putatively "woke" language can so easily be co-opted by the CIA, is it really emancipatory? Either time to get new language or pay less attention to language.https://twitter.com/CIA/status/1387431636732633089 …

You are a lot smarter than this, Jeet. Language can always be co-opted; it is in its nature. The idea that there is some sort of pure language which can not be co-opted is like the idea that there is a pure politics which can not be co-opted.

Jeet, I think you’re missing the fact that “pay less attention to language” is an astoundingly bad idea.

"Don't let the language sway you" would be better framing.

When you pay less attention, you miss when the language is being dressed onto something it doesn't belong to, like this instance where you're just gonna go with the cia. They're not even using terms right yet you want to just strip us of the ability to discuss shit cause of it

I would think if there one thing many high school students were forced to learn by reading Orwell is that language is fairly important in communicating about the past and present and articulating a radically different future.
