I think there are times when it applies, yes (like when people are raising huge amounts of money and misusing it for their personal benefit rather than the intended purposes).

Or when someone gloms onto a cause in a way that strongly suggests they're cynically milking it for gain (e.g. Candace Owens). Here, though, it's clearly being used to refer to people who are doing perfectly legit punditry and advocacy, just with a slant you dislike.
