He took exception to something that Edith Oliver had written in The New Yorker and sent me a rather tart note. She was always published before me, as the senior critic, so it was possible to look at the end of the section and think that something she wrote was by me.

I wrote him back pointing out that I hadn't written the piece he objected to and he replied, "I never pay any attention to bylines unless they're Katha's." I was incensed.
