      1. I remain fascinated by these tweets as an example of centrist identity politics. The underlying assumption is that any criticism of Elon Musk has to be bad faith, motivated by jealousy & hair-shirt asceticism. 5 minutes of reading about Musk would indicate that's not so.pic.twitter.com/vUmXPvKlDi

      2. The cult of Musk is very strong (just tweet a criticism of Musk & you'll see). The cult seems is the centrist know-it-all equivalent of Trumpism: the billionaire savior who breaks the rules is the only one who can save us in a period of stagnation & decadence!

      3. Like the Trumpists, the Muskites respond to all criticism, however grounded, factual and even undeniable -- with a wave and dismissal of the critics as haters & losers. In a strange way it's actually good that Musk has problematic views on a range of topics. We want covid denialists to buy electric cars too!

I think your focus on decadence is well said. Just as trumpists focus on social and racial decadence, Musk's (of which I am one!) focus on technological decadence, on a system of knowledge that conspires to deny an extraordinary future. Musk is the hero that breaks these chains!

That explains the urge to defend him so much. Lots of Musks fans thing individual things Musk says or does are foolish or awful, but Musk represents that optimism in the future that they cherish.

Elizabeth Warren’s live evisceration of Mike Bloomberg on the debate stage really was the unexpected blessing of 2020 for saving us from months of the same kind of malarkey.
