      1. Pelosi's words are being dismissed as a gaffe, a sign of verbally ineptness or lack of thought. But there's something more interesting and important at work about not understanding what Black Lives Matter means.https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1384624338683502592 …

      2. Atherton is persuasive here that what Pelosi was doing was echoing the language civil rights movement used when talking about those martyred for a cause.https://twitter.com/AthertonKD/status/1384628317588885509 …

      Jeet Heer added,

      Kelsey D. Atherton @AthertonKD
The language Pelosi used is reminiscent of that adopted for the obituaries of civil rights martyrs, framing it as knowingly risked sacrifice with political aim. She fundamentally misunderstands how Floyd's murder was violence police chose to inflict on him during his daily life.

      3. It's easy to see Pelosi's logic here. The language of sacrifice & martyrdom was how the civil rights movement steeled itself in the face of violence. Floyd energized a new civil rights movement. But the horror of Floyd's murder is that he wasn't a martyr but a ordinary person

      4. The radical claim of Black Lives Matter is that all Black lives matter, not just the heroes & the martyrs. This is in the face of a white supremacy where it's all too easy for any Black life, not just the heroes & martyrs, to face state violence. Pelosi's words obscured that

          5. Pelosi's attempt at a false consolation point to a fissure between the Democratic leadership and the social movements that continue to press for change. More thoughts on this (and other things) here:https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/how-not-to-mourn-george-floyd …

Or put it another way: when the late John Lewis stepped onto the bridge at Selma, he knew he could have been injured or killed. George Floyd had no such expectation when he was going about his everyday life on the day he died.

I hear what you're saying but I'm so struck by the way Mr. Floyd behaved while he was dying. It was gracious. I know that's weird and absurd but it was unique in that it really-well dispelled the myth that black men are dangerous and it was caught on tape. Maybe? He was a hero.

Ellison said something similar in his speech and from what I am aware wasn’t criticized. I think because he said it better.

I'm guessing she is referring to H.R.7120 — Justice in Policing Act of 2020 and that it was because of the horror he was put through that pushed legislators to draft a bill addressing issues surrounding it. Maybe that's just my perception...

Human beings are meaning making machines. AND, yeah..."making a purchase at a convenience store" is so different from "making an eyes-open commitment to a cause, aware of the risks."

And one could argue that it is precisely elevating the violent killing of an “ordinary person” to an understanding of sacrificial violence, extends the brutality of that violence to all (Black) lives, themselves as embodiments of a certain transcendence = humanity.
