About Philip Roth I alone in preferring the run of the 1980s early 1990s (Zuckerman Bound + Counterlife + Sabbath's Theater) to the later American trilogy?

Oh yeah, definitely. I'm always delighted by the fact that Roth's favorite of his books -- Sabbath's Theater -- is also the one Iike best.

Feel like Operation Shylock, temporally and thematically, belongs in group too

It's part of the run but I have mixed feelings -- parts of it are terrific but some of it feels too long and as often when he ventures into fantastika, Roth chickens out at the end (it was all a drug-induced dream).
