Wouldn't this mean Touch of Evil, almost always cited as the film that closes out the noir era, is not in fact a film noir?

Touch of Evil is precisely about the tension between the scientific pretence of the police procedural and the dark, unknowable motives which are the lifeblood of noir.

I’m not a prepared to defend my tweet as if it’s a doctoral dissertation, my lovelies. It’s just my own personal feeling. I think that the sensibility of noir does not comfortably overlap with stories that are primarily about policing.
