the point is that biopolitics is a paradigm of thinking about governance/state power that emerged in(/defines) the modern era. Before we had the tools to control populations and reproduction, we couldn't have biopolitics

i mean, that seems wrong to me. most societies are about creating conditions of control of populations and reproduction, it's just we have more fine tools and more reflective means now maybe

John, I can't even tell you how much cachet and visceral thrill there was in college at UChicago to be able to speak in the argot of French theory. The 1988-92 equivalent of going to Stanford now and talking about your tech startup. Where I really should have been reading Weber.

You should. My entire college years unfolded under the sign of Allen Bloom and "political correctness." It was clearly the best they could do on short notice after the death of the Soviet Union.

You should look up the "Second Thoughts" Conference held in circa 1990 or so (with Hilton Kramer, David Horowitz & the gang). Very illuminating about the shift from cold war to culture war. I think Hitchens wrote it up.
