I'm trying to stay out of latest TNR fracas. Honestly I am. I mean I was given a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape the magazine and have said my share about what it should be. It's time to let others have their say. But maybe I can clear up some misconceptions?

The implication here is that vocal intramural editorial disagreement about direction of TNR is an innovation of "woke" culture. That's only true if you ignore the entire history of the magazine from 1914 onwards. Look up Randolph Bourne & Walter Lippmann.pic.twitter.com/UtIdpTmzmt

Randolph Bourne's World War I era critique of TNR (that pragmatic liberalism easily lends itself to become a junior ally of imperialism & militarism) was prophetic and is still pertinent!

Anyways, John Ganz, as usual,, is absolutely on point here:https://twitter.com/lionel_trolling/status/1376262004260884481 …

John Ganz @lionel_trollingThis is such a load of bullshit—a lot of the people who were upset had built relationships at the new TNR and felt like it was a welcoming home for their writing and sensibility and just were sad to see an era they felt good about end. For my part it had nothing to do with... pic.twitter.com/ST2bvfqx9ZShow this thread2 replies 2 retweets 89 likesShow this thread -
Also, one problem with the anti-woke obsessives is that even when they are occasionally right, they apply their framework to many, many situations where it isn't relevant and obfuscates rather than illuminates.

Already linked to
@lionel_trolling's thread but I want to underline this particular tweet. Actually existing TNR publishes a wide spectrum of opinion ranging from socialist to centrist liberals to neo-Trumpian rightists (like Cauldwell).https://twitter.com/lionel_trolling/status/1376263351446220804 …Jeet Heer added,
