I’m quite serious. Community institutions promote order. It’s unsurprising that crime is up in a year when many people — especially teenagers and young adults — are at loose ends without their usual commitments. We need places where people are expected at specific times.

Has there been a comparable uptick in crime in all societies where schools have been shut? (Genuine question. I haven't seen anything suggesting crime surge in other nations but I could be missing something).

American lockdown isn't like lockdowns in other society's. People have done whatever they wanted with no rules and stuff has just been closed.

I think most other countries have prioritized keeping schools open. Even in places where schools have had to close temporarily, like the UK, schools have stayed open much more consistently than here.

Anecdotally, the justice system in the US is grinding very slowly and probably letting the crime rate tick up but I have no real numbers.

Didn’t countries who closed schools have generally much stricter “lockdown” regulations? Isn’t the US an outlier for closed schools but open recreation, essentially creating an extended summer break, an environment perhaps more prone to boredom and mischief?

.@jbarro take correlation as causation. He offers no evidence to support his claim that 'institutions' promote 'order.' Nor does he properly define 'order.' #COVID19 has been hard on lots of folks. It could well be that some act out simply because of the hardships endured.
