This whole thread is interesting. I remember noticing the adulation of a certain cartoon aristomonarchist blend by the WFB American right--like lionizing that dude Taki--and thinking it was funny given the right's open play for the WWC.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1373284128397750274 …

      4. Pat Buchanan is maybe the sole surviving example of the older right-wing Anglophobia. Of German-Irish descent, Buchanan still writes Lindberghian books blaming Brits for snookering USA into fighting WWI and WWII.

I think I have a better grasp of all that now, but in the 70s and 80s it just seemed weird. Later I learned of Kevin Phillips's contempt for WFB--called him "Squire Willie" and thought he was blowing the populist pitch.

Reagan of course loved WFB and vice versa, pulling a Vegas regal-style presidency together with the individualist cowboy type.

On Buchanan's Anglophobia I'd only note this: "If we had to take a million immigrants in, say, Zulus next year or Englishmen and put them down in Virginia, what group would be easier to assimilate and would cause less problems for the people in Virginia?"

My answer at the time was the Zulus, obviously, given what we know about Englishmen, ha ha. But Buchanan's Anglophobia, though probably real, seems to have taken a back seat to his racism.

Anglophobia in this context is not a hatred of English race (in fact bringing over English immigrants is good as way to shore up whiteness) but of England as a rival empire to USA and one that tricks America into fighting its wars.

Funny reversal of General Gage's (to me pretty convincing) testimony before Parliament that the major cause of the Seven Years War was that Britain had been duped by her American colonies.
